Over the weekend, I had the pleasure of being invited to this year's Dorset County Show, a charming showcase of Dorset’s rural life and long-held traditions. Situated in the rolling countryside, just a stone's throw from Dorchester town centre, this year's fair was as vibrant and exciting as ever. Even the temperamental September weather couldn’t dampen spirits! Despite my (very!) muddy boots, I had loads of fun exploring all the weird and wonderful things on offer - from fairground rides, to motorbike displays, tomahawk throwing, and horse shows, there really was something for everyone at this year's show.
As an animal lover, one of the highlights of my day was visiting all the livestock that had been brought in to participate in the show. Visitors of all ages were invited to come and admire a wide variety of farm animals - giant cows, fluffy hatchlings and everything in between! Getting to interact with these animals was a rare and special experience that truly emphasized the Show's dedication to celebrating Dorset's agricultural history, creating unforgettable memories for young children and adults alike.
By lunchtime, I had worked up quite an appetite and felt spoiled for choice when deciding what to eat. Many stalls in the designated food & drink area celebrated classic British flavours, like fresh-of-the-grill burgers, sausages, and pork pies, showcasing the best of our local produce. However, (as a veggie!) I was delighted to find that there were also food stands offering dishes from pallets far and wide, including Greek wraps, Asian-inspired noodle dishes, and homemade Italian favourites. I couldn’t resist trying a delicious vegetable curry, while my friend opted for a juicy beef burger, which perfectly captures the variety of food on offer! We enjoyed our lunch whilst listening to a live band, before quickly ducking under the marquee as the black clouds started to close in. We (of course!) made sure to grab a glass of Pimms on our way to shelter. Nothing says British summer like an ice-cold glass of Pimms in a rainstorm!
When the rain had passed, we watched the show jumping horses take to the field, before having a long look around the food hall. After dutifully trying many, many, samples, we bought some treats to take home with us; a big bag of homemade fudge and a triple chocolate brownie - yum! Thoroughly impressed by both the experiences on offer, and the cheery, show-must-go-on attitude of all the guests and the staff, we at last called it a day and got the free shuttle bus back to Dorchester.
The Dorset County Show was more than just a day of fun; it was an incredible opportunity to learn about farming and the importance of supporting local agricultural workers. With interactive exhibits, hands-on animal experiences, the show serves to educate visitors of all ages about the rich farming heritage of Dorset. So, whether you’re adventuring with young children, enjoying the food, or simply soaking-in the buzzing atmosphere, this annual event has something for you!
Who else managed to attend the County Show this year? I would love to hear all about it. And have I managed to convince you for next year?!
Let me know! :)
